Jennie Kim was born on January 16, 1996. She lived in Auckland, New Zealand from 2004, attending Waikowhai Intermediate School and ACG Parnell College, before returning to South Korea in 2010 to audition for YG Entertainment.

She released her debut solo single "SOLO" in November 2018, which topped South Korea's Circle Digital Chart and the US Billboard World Digital Songs chart. In 2023 she made her acting debut, credited as Jennie Ruby Jane, in the HBO series The Idol, and released the special single "You & Me." She signed with Columbia Records in 2024, releasing the single "Mantra" that October, and released her debut solo studio album Ruby on March 7, 2025.
